Downloading and Installing Software

Many software applications available at the Pocket PC Download Store offer a free trial version that is either limited in functionality or expires after a short period of time so you can get a good sense of what the application is like before purchasing it. Follow these instructions after downloading a free trial or after purchasing a full version of the application to install it to your device.

If the process of downloading software is new to you, the steps below will help.

Step 1. When the File Download box appears, choose "Save this file to disk" and click OK.

Step 2. Choose where to save the file and click Save. It's important to remember where you save the file, since you will need to access it later. You can save the file anywhere, but saving the file to your PC Desktop will make it easy to find for installation. The file will download to the place you specified and the File Download box should close automatically when the download is complete. If it doesn't, click Close.

Step 3. Place your Pocket PC in its cradle. Make sure the cradle is connected to your PC.

Step 4. Make sure ActiveSync is running. Check for the ActiveSync icon, a circle with 2 arrows, in your lower right system tray on your PC. It will be green when running or gray when not running. If the Active Sync icon does not appear in the system tray, access Active Sync via your PC's Start Menu or a Desktop icon. If Active Sync is not in the Start Menu, you may need to reinstall. If your handheld does not use ActiveSync for synchronization (e.g. some Casio devices), please refer to the user's guide that came with your device for installation instructions.

Step 5. Find the software you downloaded from Handango (likely on your Desktop) and identify the file extension by looking at the last few characters of the file name (e.g. .exe, .zip, .cab, etc).

• For .ZIP, you will need an unzip utility such as WinZip installed on your PC to open it. If you don't already have WinZip (you can check by selecting Start > Programs and looking for "WinZip"), open a new Web browser window, go to www.winzip.com, and download and install a free evaluation of WinZip (choose the Classic version).
• Once WinZip is installed on your computer, double click on the .ZIP file you downloaded from Handango.
• Within the WinZip window, highlight any .EXE or .CAB files appropriate for your Pocket PC processor. Click on the Extract button to extract the files to your desktop and then follow the instructions below. If you don't know the processor type of your device, consult your Pocket PC's documentation.
• For .CAB extensions, place the file appropriate for your Pocket PC processor into your Pocket PC My Documents folder located on your desktop PC (or whatever folder synchronizes with your Pocket PC). If you don't know the processor type of your device, consult your Pocket PC's documentation.
• The .CAB file will be placed on your handheld through ActiveSync.
• Use File Explorer on your handheld to browse to the folder that contains the .CAB file. (You will not actually see the .CAB extension because the Pocket PC File Explorer hides file extensions.)
• Tap the file name and follow the instructions to install.

Deleting Software

Deleting software programs from your Pocket PC device is sometimes necessary or desirable when you want to make room for new applications or have an application you no longer use. Keep in mind you cannot remove applications that were pre-installed on your device by the manufacturer. You can remove programs from your Pocket PC in one of two ways - from the desktop and from the device.

Desktop Method

Step 1. Connect your Pocket PC to your desktop PC and start ActiveSync.

Step 2. Click the Tools menu item, then select Add/Remove Programs.

Step 3. Select the program you wish to remove by un-checking the box next to the program name.

Step 4. Click OK in the Add/Remove Programs window, and the program will uninstall.

Device Method

On a Pocket PC:

Step 1. From the start menu, select Settings, then select the System tab.

Step 2. Select Remove Programs, find the application you wish to remove and tap Remove.

Step 3. Tap Yes to confirm your request.

Step 4. Follow any further instructions that appear on your screen. Tap OK in the top right-hand corner of the screen to close the Remove Programs utility.
